“A
capable wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not harm all the days of her life.” Proverb 31:10-12
I
encourage you to read the entire proverb and see if you can make the Bride of
Christ (the Church) fit this description. I wonder if we can honestly say
we as the Church (or even as a church) are doing the Bridegroom any “good” – or
– if we are only looking out for our own good. Does the “heart” of the
Bridegroom “trust in us”? Does the Kingdom of Heaven “have no lack of
gain” because of our devotion to excellence and faithfulness?
Reading
the chapter as a check-list of all that is desired by the Lord of His Bride is
a challenge, but there is revealed in this chapter the “cause and effect” of a
covenantal relationship whose demands may seem a little overwhelming until we
realize the more-than-ample reward that is sure to come when “her
children rise up and call her happy; her Husband, too, and He praises her” (31:28).
This
is who we the Church are called to be and to do. Could this description
be adequate to describe and find us if we came up missing?
Blessings,
Michael
