“The
tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest
a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of
iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the
whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by
hell.” James
3:5-6
By
the same token, however, the tongue can also set ablaze a great blessing to
spread just as quickly, just as easily … if we speak of the Gospel; the Good
News that is for all who will receive it. The wisdom of James is
set with the wisdom of our grandmothers who always taught us: ‘if you cannot
say something good, say nothing at all.’ Political wanna-be’s would do
well to embrace this wisdom!
Let
us be mindful that it doesn’t take much to start a destructive fire especially
in a world in which people seem more willing to believe the worst rather than
embrace the best. If we claim to know what is best – that is, Christ our
Lord in the Holy Father’s Covenant – then let us proclaim His very best!
If not, then let us observe the profound wisdom that is silence.
Blessings,
Michael
